Anyone see the Flyers-Caps game last night? I turned on (NHLN) when Ward scored his 3rd goal and it was 7-0. The next shift, was a brawl. Emery even left the crease and fought even though the Caps goalie didn’t want to initially. Lotso Penalties ensued.
2 things struck me as I was listening. Especially, since it was the Flyers that initiated the extra-hockey events.
1) The Flyers announcers including Keith Jones were applauding this because they thought the team needed to do something to get them fired up for the next game. Maybe they are right. But, isn’t that too late? It’s 7-0 in the 3rd period and they are getting mad now?. Yes, something Drew would say too. Now, from promoting the fighting as a good thing, juxtapose that with the Downie fight that happened earlier in the game. Downie, as a result of the fight is gone from injury/concussion, and they just traded for him.
The Flyers are the Broad Street Bullies, but last night, just some sore losers.
2) I did not see all the goals. But, while it will be incorrect to slam him for the Caps to running up the score, the payback to Adam Oates for running his mouth on the Hertl goal, is to slam him for running up score and and accuse him of “not respecting” the game. After, the NHL is suppose to be “hard.”
But I guess we will see the next couple of games
Sacto, that is question about Havlat. The tendencies you mention and whether he can play the Sharks way.
Unfortunately for Marty, in his 3 seasons in Teal so far, has not had a training camp to actually learn it. And I don’t think he’s been on a team that has the same structure. My disappoint in him, he hasn’t really fit. I say that even with some success last season. So, let’s see…
Irwin might be a healthy scratch? Not sure I understand that one unless TMc feels like he should take a game off from time to time, just to keep his legs stronger through the year.
When all are healthy, we have 7 d-men, maybe TMc figures its a good idea to have each guy get some nights off along the way. Though Irwin is the last guy I’d give the night off. First are the older guys, Hannan, Stuart and Boyle. Only Hannan has played every game so far. To me, that makes him first in line for the night off.
Then Demers since he tends to get beat and miss games. Then Vlasic and Braun, who’ll be counted on to play heavy and very physical minutes. Last of all, Irwin.
Of course, TMc might play 7 d-men tonight.
Zeke, I agree with Irwin being the choice…he brings a decent game with him, but he was absolutely horrible in LA…slow, late, overmatched. Perhaps a “maintenance” game that he can watch from the suite will serve him well.
Not to say he was the only D man who was off…Poor Stuart had the worst OT I’ve seen a guy have in a long time. But I still think Irwin was the correct choice. Go with 6 D…let them run 4 complete lines…
Big Game tonight. The Pacific division is shaping up to be a real dogfight all season long. It is very important to get home ice advantage this year for the PO’s. Time for the Sharks to hold the fort against those mongrels from Phoenix. A rabid dog needs to be put down quickly! I hope the Sharks can score early and keep their foot on the Yote’s neck for a full 60.
I think the Yotes are something like 1st or 2nd in the league in goals scored in the 2nd and 3rd periods….in the 20+ for each if I remember correctly.
So yes, getting to them early will be key.
That’s why I have Mr Early tonight, #48!
Saw only the line brawl…Simmonds and especially Emery applauded for firing up the Flyers, but at day’s end their team still stinks and is last place in the metro. Not much accomplished. Emery lucky the league has no precedents to suspend him, not that it would matter much. (Maybe they better make policy on that, with Roy now a coach in the league.)
Perhaps Oates is ok with piling it on as long as no one is smiling.
Should be an interesting game with the new line-ups, Boyle back. I feel for Marty – fractured my pelvic bone and it took me a year to feel comfortable crossing the street, let alone jump on ice. Solar plexus is the center of one’s being and much depends on being ‘centered’. Not to sound too freakin’ California, but Yoga would be a really good thing for him to do, if he’s not already…
